Performance and Processor Terms
CPU (Central Processing Unit): The primary chip that executes instructions. Processor families are segmented into performance tiers — entry-level, mid-range, and high-performance — each suited to different workloads.
Core Count: The number of independent processing units within a CPU. More cores generally improve multitasking and parallel workloads like video rendering, though single-core speed still governs everyday responsiveness.

How many times per second a display redraws its image, measured in Hz. A 60 Hz screen redraws 60 times per second; 120 Hz or higher feels noticeably smoother for scrolling, video playback, and gaming.
NVMe SSD
A type of solid-state storage that connects via the PCIe bus rather than the older SATA interface, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. NVMe drives are now standard in most modern laptops.
IPS Panel
A display technology known for accurate colors and wide viewing angles compared to older TN panels. IPS is common in mid-range and higher laptops and is a reliable baseline for everyday productivity and media use.
RAM (Random Access Memory)

Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E
The current mainstream wireless networking standard (802.11ax). Wi-Fi 6E extends into the 6 GHz band for less congestion and faster speeds in environments with many connected devices.
Soldered RAM
Memory that is permanently attached to the motherboard and cannot be removed or upgraded. Many thin laptops use soldered RAM to save space, so the amount at purchase is the amount you keep for the device's lifetime.
OLED Display
A screen technology where each pixel produces its own light, enabling true blacks, high contrast ratios, and vibrant colors. OLED panels generally offer better image quality than LCD alternatives but may cost more.
Form Factor
The physical size and shape category of a laptop — such as clamshell, 2-in-1 convertible, or ultrabook. Form factor determines portability, keyboard size, port availability, and intended use.
Display, Memory, and Connectivity Terms
Resolution: The total number of pixels displayed, expressed as width × height (e.g., 1920×1080, called Full HD or 1080p). Higher resolution produces sharper images; 2560×1600 (QHD+) and 3840×2160 (4K UHD) are found on premium panels.
Color Gamut (sRGB, DCI-P3): The range of colors a display can reproduce. sRGB is the standard for web content; DCI-P3 is a wider gamut used in professional video and photography workflows. A display covering 100% sRGB suits most users; 90%+ DCI-P3 coverage is meaningful only if you do color-critical work.
Nits (Display Brightness): The unit of luminance measuring how bright a screen can get. Screens rated above 400 nits are generally comfortable outdoors; HDR-capable panels typically peak at 600 nits or higher.
DDR5 vs. LPDDR5: Both are current-generation RAM standards. DDR5 is used in higher-power laptops; LPDDR5 (Low Power DDR5) is optimized for ultrabooks and thin devices where efficiency matters more than peak bandwidth.
USB-C vs. Thunderbolt: All Thunderbolt 4 ports use the USB-C connector shape, but not all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt offers higher throughput and broader device compatibility. Check the spec sheet icon or documentation to confirm which standard a port supports.
Bluetooth Version: Later Bluetooth versions (5.0, 5.3) offer improved range, lower power consumption, and better support for multiple simultaneous connections compared to older standards.
